Is skipping an allowable option?
Letter to the Editor
On the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3, when I went into our pro shop at the golf course, I was surprised to see two adolescent boys checking in to golf at the same time. I asked them, “why aren’t you guys in school?”
The answer that I received was “we were having a field day today and we didn’t want to go, so we decided to golf.”
I thought really, what is wrong with this picture? Here it is only the second day of actual education happening and they are already doing a ‘field day! Apparently, field days are supposed to be educational, so here we have two young students given the option of skipping education they don’t want?
I was left with the impression that their teacher had allowed this, but I guess it’s possible they just skipped on their own. If they were allowed to do this, it is a terrible example of how the education system is so flawed and young people are growing up without any discipline or responsibility.
Perhaps the local school board will provide some clarity on this.
