Local father, daughter capture powerlifting world titles

A Cranbrook father and daughter have captured world championship titles and set a Canadian record in powerlifting while dealing with complications of a major hurricane.
Shayne Parker and 15-year-old daughter Aspen Parker have just returned from Virginia Beach, Virginia where they competed at the 100% Raw Powerlifting World Championship October 12 to 14.
They both took first place in their respected divisions, with Aspen competing in the 14/15-year-old age group at 132 lb. weight class and Shayne in the 45 to 49-year-old age group in the 198 lb. weight class.
“We had a very rough trip down, with flight delays and cancellations due to Hurricane Michael,” Shayne Parker related.
The chance to head to the world championship began during a meet in Medicine Hat in August.

“We both lifted very well, setting records in our lifts. We were asked if we wanted to go to the 100% Raw Powerlifting Worlds in Virginia Beach,” related Shayne, who has been powerlifting for more than 15 years.
During the competition Aspen Parker lifted a 143-pound Squat, a 93-lb. bench press (new Canadian record) and a 220-lb. deadlift, taking first in her division.
Shayne only deadlifted, managing a 440 lb. and 470 lb. attempt and missed a 501 lb. lift, taking first place in his division.
A Corporal with the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment, Shayne also placed first in the Law Enforcement Division as well at the meet.
