Local fundraiser nearing 50% of goal

The community continues to rally around a local woman in her fight against pancreatic cancer, and organizers of a local fundraising campaign are staggered by the response.

Lori Engler, an active community volunteer, was recently diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer and a group of friends and coworkers have spearheaded efforts to raise funds to help Lori and her family with the costs of treatment.

“Just over one week into our fundraising efforts, we are already almost at 50% of our goal. Words alone cannot express how grateful we are to each and everyone who has donated,” said spokesperson Loree Duczek. “Beyond the financial contributions, the family is also so moved by the messages and words of support and encouragement.”

Upon receiving the diagnosis and in consultation with oncologists here in Canada, Engler began looking into treatment options after learning the only therapy being offered in Canada is chemotherapy, which would possibly extend her life but offered no hope for remission.

Her quest took her to Austria, and a world-renowned doctor who has expertise in treating pancreatic cancer using advanced integrative immunotherapy treatments combined with hyperthermia and multiple other strategies. Learn more about Dr. Kleef and his work.

Engler is currently in Austria and has completed her first week of treatment. The five to six week treatment and expenses will cost approximately $150,000 and more than one treatment may be required over the years to come.

“Our focus from the moment Lori received her diagnosis was hope. We thank everyone who has donated to help support Lori’s Fight for Life and hope to see people continue to give what they can as she chooses life and hope,” added Duczek.

As of noon on September 2, just over $47,000 had been raised of the $100,000 goal.
