City of Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt last night confirmed that Councillor Tom Shypitka has resigned his seat and a by-election will be called soon.

Elected to the B.C. Legislature as MLA for Kootenay East in the May 9 provincial election, Shypitka (BC Liberal Party) has opted to step away from his city duties to focus on his new role.

“Tom was a really good councillor; very dedicated and great to work with,” Pratt said at the conclusion of last night’s regular council meeting. “His heart was in the right place; he did his research. We’re going to miss him.”

A chief election officer has been hired and she will begin work on August 2. A by-election date will be set soon after.
