Museia to explore parallels between Jesus and Superman

Creative writers don’t just make stories, they find unique ways to interpret culture, holding up a mirror to reveal unexpected truths.

On September 25, College of the Rockies’ Museia Lecture series continues with creative writing and English instructor Dr. Nathan Dueck.

His talk, “Jesus vs Superman” explores how a comic book creation grew into a cultural figure of mythic proportions, echoing themes that parallel the story of Christ.

The presentation will take place from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the College’s Cranbrook Campus’ main Lecture Theatre (Room KC250). The event is free and pre-registration is required.

“The cultural impact of Superman shows no signs of slowing,” Dueck said. “In this presentation, we will look at how fans and media tend to conflate the Last Son of Krypton with the Son of God and explore the cultural weight of this phenomenon. While fandom is not the same as faith, you’ll see why Superman is sometimes regarded through a lens reserved for the divine.”

In addition to teaching Creative Writing 101 this fall, Dueck also regularly teaches introductory courses in academic composition and second-year courses in various literary genres and forms. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a Master of Arts in English Literature, and a Ph.D. with a focus on Canadian Literature. In addition to publishing articles about Canadian writing, Dueck has written three poetry collections and will soon be releasing a memoir.

Don’t miss Dr. Dueck’s intriguing exploration of Jesus vs Superman on September 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the College’s Cranbrook Campus main Lecture Theatre.
