New small fire reported south of Cranbrook
The BC Wildfire Service today (July 30) reports a new, small wildfire about 40 km southeast of Cranbrook.
Discovered July 29, the .01 hectare fire is noted as being near Wickman Creek. The fire is believed to be person-caused.
It is the second fire reported in the region, including the Sheep Creek area fire (4.8 ha), which is noted as being under control.
Thanks to the persistent heatwave, much of the East Kootenay is now under extreme fire danger according to the BC Wildfire Service, which describes such conditions as: “Extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts. General forest activities may be restricted, including open burning, industrial activities and campfires.”
