Obituary for Dennis Wesley Schmidt

Dennis Wesley Schmidt

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Dennis Wesley Schmidt on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at the age of 91. He is survived by his daughter Lillian Schmidt, granddaughters Sarah Dean and Katie Dean, brother Gerry Smith (Gail), brother Vernon Schmidt (Naomi), Tammy Hanna, and nieces and nephew.

Dennis was born in Kelvington, Saskatchewan and moved to B.C. with his family when he was still a teenager. The family travelled through the Rockies in an Oldsmobile in late autumn to avoid the long endless Saskatchewan winters. Dennis did most of the driving on this journey at age 16. When his family settled in Langley, Dennis, being the oldest was responsible for assisting with feeding and providing for his family. This resourcefulness learned at a young age and amplified by a depression era youth forged the person of many talents whose community minded spirit was inherent everywhere he lived.

After having raised his family by running his own garage as a mechanic and building the house in which his children were raised, he turned his life’s passion for photography into a highly successful career . This passion for learning through experience informed his photography, his mechanical and engineering projects, and his engagement of all who he encountered.

For well over 90 years Dennis lived a vibrant life full of adventure, learning, creating and most importantly sharing the benefit of his vast knowledge with anyone lucky enough to have met him.

He is predeceased by his beloved parents Alice and John Schmidt and sister Irene Schmidt.

Cremation has taken place and private family service will follow.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Rolandi and the 3rd floor nursing staff of East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
Condolences for the family can be offered at:
