RCMP and CFES combine to safely manage unstable material

Late Monday morning, October 27, a passing motorist stopped in Cranbrook after realizing that some family keepsakes being transported in their vehicle could be potentially explosive.

Wanting to do the right thing, they contacted Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, and our crews responded to secure the material in a safe location.

Once it became clear that the item had some explosive potential, our team reached out to the Cranbrook RCMP for assistance. Working together, the scene was quickly isolated to keep the public safe.

The RCMP arranged for their specialized Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to attend and safely dispose of the substance.

The resources are external to our local RCMP detachment and serve residents across British Columbia.

“This was one of those unique situations that called for specialized resources beyond what we have here locally,” says Chief Scott Driver, Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “We’re very fortunate to have such strong partnerships with the local RCMP detachment, and that they have access to this Explosives Unit. Their expertise and teamwork ensured everything was handled safely and professionally.”

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services and the Cranbrook RCMP want to remind everyone that if you ever come across something that looks unsafe or potentially explosive, leave it where it is and call the police.
