RCMP asks public to stay off highways

Cranbrook RCMP is asking motorists to stay off the highways due to the large accumulation of snow that has occurred over the past weekend.

Several roads are closed in the area, as per the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and school busses are not running.

With this large amount of snowfall, conditions deteriorated over the weekend causing the Ministry of Transportation to close the road between Sparwood and the Alberta border. The Alberta government has hinted that Highway 3 may not re-opened until tomorrow (Feb. 7) at Crowsnest Pass.

Roads are also closed near Elko due to avalanche concerns.

Roadways and sidewalks in the City of Cranbrook are also snow covered and hazardous to get around. Although city crews are working tirelessly in their efforts to remove the snow, it will still take time to have streets/ sidewalks plowed.

“Snow is still expected in the coming days and Cranbrook RCMP is asking anyone who does not need to be travelling on the roadways to stay home,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron of Cranbrook RCMP.
