Regional science fair today at COTR

Youth Science Canada’s (YSC) East Kootenay region is hosting a regional science fair for aspiring young scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs at College of the Rockies today, Thursday, March 7.

This event is in partnership with Rogers, who recently provided a $50,000 national community grant in support of this initiative, with the winning student receiving the Ted Rogers Innovation Award.

Today’s event is one of 102 regional science fairs that take place across Canada annually, with approximately 25,000 students competing across the country. Youth from grades 7-12 present a project that focuses on an important issue in society – health, environment, innovation and energy among others. At each fair, one project will receive a Ted Rogers Innovation Award that acknowledges future leaders and their innovative accomplishments.

“Science fairs challenge youth to apply their STEM skills and knowledge to solve everyday issues through projects,” said Reni Barlow, Executive Director, Youth Science Canada. “We are grateful that Rogers supports our vision to help young entrepreneurs recognize their full potential and evoke change.”

The Ted Rogers Community Grants program is dedicated to supporting organizations across Canada that are focused on unlocking learning and leadership opportunities to aspiring young leaders. These grants support charitable organizations running innovative community programs focused on inspiring youth to continue their education and to develop skills to help them succeed.

In addition to its annual Community Grants, Rogers helps young leaders through the Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund, a program that provides educational opportunities to bright young leaders across the country. Since launch in 2017, over 600 scholarships have been awarded to deserving youth across Canada.

“At Rogers, we believe there is power in coming together to make a brighter future possible for generations to come,” said Peter King, Senior Director, Corporation Social Responsibility.  “We are pleased to partner with Youth Science Canada and support these regional science fairs to help make a significant difference in the lives of our young participants.”

Founded in 1962, YSC has committed over 50 years to support the growth and development of youth who have a passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). With the guidance of approximately 8,000 volunteers and the community support of Rogers, YSC continues to be recognized as a leading outreach network for youth in STEM.
