Request for land donation approved for housing project
City of Cranbrook council March 9 approved a proposal from the Rotary Club of Cranbrook to build a 12 to14‑unit affordable seniors housing project on a new lot to be created on 5th Street South.
As part of the proposal, the city would donate the land for $1, with conditions that the property must be used for the intended purpose within two years or it will return to city ownership, and that the city will receive the first right of refusal if the property is ever sold.
Additional conditions include Rotary addressing existing encroachments from the neighbouring St. Mary’s School property, creating a trail connection to Rotary Way, and registering a housing agreement to ensure the units remain affordable.
The request follows a July 2025 letter from the Rotary Club seeking either donated land or a long‑term lease for the project.
Since the city has already updated the Official Community Plan and zoning (as of February 23, 2025) to allow medium‑density multifamily housing on the site, the proposed development is now aligned with local land‑use policies.
The Rotary Club’s design includes three one‑story bungalow‑style buildings, each with four one‑bedroom units, with one building also containing laundry, office, and storage space.
Council also authorized the Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer to sign required documents and to grant the Rotary Club agent authorization to submit all applications needed to advance the project.
