Rotary film festival supports Coldest Night

Shelley Balfour, Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Film Festival Chair, committed some of the proceeds of this year’s annual event to the Coldest Night of the Year project.

Shelley was inspired to choose this particular project, after being invited to and watching the Us and Them movie.

“The movie is about four homeless folks in Victoria. I was struck by the story and the speech that our local folks presented about the Coldest Year of the Night Campaign. They spoke of our homeless citizens here and the services they (Homeless and Outreach program) provide each and every day. I thought it would be a great opportunity for the Rotary Club to give back to our most vulnerable citizens,” said Shelley.

Shelley proudly states that Dewayne Penner, president of the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club was able to present a cheque for $800 to Tracey Pound, Homeless and Outreach Coordinator for Cranbrook. The money was raised from the first night’s proceeds of the Film Festival. In addition, Shelley says that an additional $370 was donated by Sunrise Rotary members and furthermore, $1,460 was raised and contributed through funds raised by the Cranbrook Teacher’s team.

“The Coldest Night of the Year project supports the Homeless and Outreach program by bringing awareness of the homelessness in our own community. “The money raised in our community stays in our community to provide our most vulnerable citizens with supplies and the support they need to survive through the program,” said Shelley.
