Solid waste collection fee rising in 2024

City of Cranbrook council Dec. 11 gave three readings to consider increasing the monthly solid waste collection fee starting in 2024 from $7 per month to $8.50 per month.

A city finance department report notes inflation as the reason for the recommended increase.

“The last increase was in 2010 when user fee rose from $7 to $7.50 per month; the monthly fee was then decreased from $7.50 to $7 in 2020 during a rebalancing of utility user fees across all three of the city’s utility services – water, sanitary sewer and solid waste. The collection user fee increase is specific to solid waste collection services only (the recycling service is currently cost neutral).

“The increase is necessary to address accumulated impacts of inflation,” explained the report to council.

A monthly increase of $1.50 to the solid waste collection user fee will generate approximately $113,831 more in revenue for 2024. The total 2024 collection user fee revenue is projected to be $646,976.
