Spring Honda Fun Run an absolute success
By Rhiannon Chippett
This year marked the seventh annual Spring Honda Fun Run for ALS, and over 25 years since the original race was founded (then titled EK 10K).
And after more than two decades of running in the Kootenays, Cranbrook and surrounding residents did not disappoint! Everyone who attended was splashed with colour, and it was a great showing for runners, walkers and supporters alike.
This year’s race saw its biggest numbers yet for family registrants, with many generations running, walking and pushing strollers across the finish line. The organizers were absolutely thrilled with the turnout, and enthusiasm of all the participants.
“We had all of the age groups covered in all categories, lots of teams, kids, families, and elite runners took part, and we were happy to see lots of smiles cross the finish line,” said Fun Run co-organizer Charlotte Spring.
The Kid’s Obstacle race was a huge hit once again, and we had lots of little ones sporting their cookie medals with pride! Also, uber-talented Trish, from Painted Turtle, had a huge line up all morning, and her creations could be seen all over the field on happy faces.
Although final numbers are still been tallied, organizers estimate having one of the largest turnouts for the five-kilometre route as well as some of the fastest overall times! The weather could not have been more perfect race day.
The Fun Run committee would like to thank its many tireless, and passionate volunteers and sponsors. “We are lucky to work with amazing volunteers and sponsors, who truly make this event possible,” added Spring.
Mr. Mike’s Cranbrook provided not only a delicious post race lunch, but also donated all proceeds to the title charity raising over $500 serving up their Mike burgers to the hungry participants. The Sam Steele Sweetheart candidates all volunteered and helped man different stations, as well as several community groups and businesses signed up to take part this year.
The team of organizers is eager to find out how much was raised for their chosen charity the BC ALS Society, over the last seven years the event has raised over $44,000 and a lot of much needed awareness for this charity, which is close to each of their hearts. All race proceeds, from registration, to personal donations, and sponsor dollars are contributed 100% to the BC ALS Society for research and patient care.
Stay tuned to hear how much this super successful event has raised … grand totals, school and corporate winners, will all be revealed very soon!
