Squadron celebrates with 10th Anniversary Parade
Ten years is just a drop in the bucket compared to age of other Corps and Squadrons, however, for us it is a milestone.
Did you know that there were two other squadrons in Cranbrook, each lasting only five years; #322 Cranbrook in 1940s and #552 Kiwanis in the 1950s.
Around 2006, 266 Kimberley Squadron Cranbrook Flight began the process of standing on their own and becoming the fourth squadron in the East Kootenay. The flight faced several challenges, and it was looking like they would not be able to continue on the path to earning their charter.
With renewed interest and a team of dedicated parents, officers, and community support, Cranbrook Flight was formally presented with their Charter in 2009, becoming 552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.
On February 19, the squadron held its 10th Anniversary Parade, recognizing the squadrons’ achievement.
On behalf of British Columbia Provincial Committee Air Cadet League of Canada, Lorenza Saule presented the Squadron – Cadets, Sponsors and Officers with a certificate recognizing completion of 10 years.
Representing Regional Cadet Support Unit Pacific, Major Scott Bissell (J3 Officer In Charge, Interior Regional Cadet Support Unit Pacific), was the Reviewing Officer. During parade he assisted Commanding Officer Captain Dorothy Palmer with a few cadet promotions and fitness badges.
Major Bissell also had the honour of recognizing Captain Rob Bott on achieving his “CD2” (pictured right). The Canadian Decoration 2 represents 32 years of Military Service.
Rob served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 22.5 years in Esquimalt and he is a member of the Canadian Reserves, Cadet Instructor Cadre for over 10 years.
The 552 Key City Squadron appreciates all of the support from the community, parents and staff. Legion Branch No. 24, and Ladies Auxiliary have been very generous in assisting our squadron over the years. The squadron is looking forward to the future.
