Street race results in vehicle impoundment

On the evening of May 26, Cranbrook RCMP General Duty officers were conducting patrols on Cranbrook Street North when a Ford F350 truck and a Toyota Supra car were observed to be initiating a drag race.

The truck attempted to speed off at approximately 100 km/h in the 60 km/h zone when Cst. Coverdale activated lights and sirens and conducted traffic stop.

The driver of the truck, who has a lengthy record consisting of multiple, recent motor vehicle offences, was issued a ticket and the truck was impounded for seven days. As a result, the driver had to phone a friend for a ride home.

“This dangerous driving behaviour is reckless and puts everyone at risk,” said S/Sgt. Barry Graham, Cranbrook RCMP Detachment commander. “As the weather warms up, we tend to see an increase in unsafe driving behaviour.

“Cranbrook RCMP will be on the lookout for speeding, impaired driving, motorists who do not obey traffic lights or stops signs and other driving offences”.

So far this year, Cranbrook RCMP has issued 36 traffic tickets, 11 traffic warnings and impounded 55 vehicles due to impaired driving under the Immediate Roadside Prohibit program.
