Surviving Space with Rick Nowell – a hands-on experience

The Cranbrook History Centre has a Travelling Exhibit titled Health in Space: Daring to Explore, a special exhibition developed by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency.

While browsing through the Space Health Exhibits, in the same theme, join the Cranbrook History Centre for an exciting and interactive Ed Talk with Rick Nowell, as we explore the challenges of astronaut survival while our Health in Space Travelling Exhibit is still on display.

Rick, who works in the Physics lab at the College of the Rockies, operates the college’s Weather Station, Meteor Camera, and assists with Astronomy and Geology labs. He will share fascinating college videos of meteors zooming over Cranbrook to crash nearby, and hands-on demonstrations that reveal the unique dangers astronauts face in space.

What are the hazards of outer space as we recreate conditions on the Moon. Experience science in action as you watch water boil at room temperature in a vacuum, hear a bell go silent in space-like conditions, and explore interactive stations featuring Geiger counters to detect deadly radiation, nebula balls to duplicate the Northern Lights and solar flares, a high-voltage Jacob’s Ladder, and more.  How long would you live if your spacesuit ruptured?  Would blood boil in space?  Would your buddy hear you scream?  Has it ever happened?

Tea, coffee and cookies will be served. This event is free, but registration is required. Don’t miss this out-of-this-world experience!

Wednesday, March 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Alexandra Hall, at the Cranbrook History Museum.

FREE registration – sign up to save your spot!
