Suspicious vehicle report leads to arrest
Cranbrook RCMP is reminding the public of the importance of reporting suspicious activity after a recent call led to the arrest of an impaired driver who was also found to be breaching multiple court-ordered conditions.
Recently, officers responded to a report from a concerned citizen regarding a suspicious vehicle parked in the Home Depot parking lot. The caller described the vehicle as having no license plate, fogged-up windows, and the engine revving, with the driver appearing to be passed out inside.
Police attended the area and located the described vehicle. The lone occupant, seated in the driver’s seat of the running vehicle, had to be roused awake by attending members and displayed symptoms consistent with being under the influence of intoxicating substances. The driver subsequently failed a roadside screening test and was arrested for impaired operation.
Further investigation revealed that the individual was bound by several court-imposed conditions, including not occupying the driver’s seat of any vehicle and not being in any vehicle unless accompanied by the registered owner. A search incident to arrest also located tools the person was prohibited from possessing, as well as an e-bike, which were all seized.
The driver was transported to the Cranbrook RCMP detachment, held for a bail hearing, and has since been remanded to a correctional centre.
“This is a great example of how community vigilance plays a key role in public safety,” said S/Sgt Barry Graham. “When residents take the time to call in suspicious activity, it allows us to respond quickly and remove potentially dangerous situations from our community.”
Cranbrook RCMP would like to thank the public for continuing to report suspicious persons and vehicles. Every call provides valuable information that helps keep our community safe.
If you see something that doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to contact the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or, in an emergency, call 911.
