The library needs your voice

Postcard Writing Campaign Wrap Up Oct. 24

Cranbrook Public Library will be wrapping up its Post Card Writing Campaign with a final opportunity for patrons of the library to voice their funding concerns from 10 a.m. to 1 pm. on Friday, October 24.

In 2025, the Cranbrook Public Library had to reduce its opening hours by 15% to stay within budget. In 2009, the province cut core funding for all 71 library systems in B..C by over 22%.

It’s been frozen at the reduced amount ever since, yet the population Cranbrook Public Library serves has grown by 18.5 percent and inflation has risen dramatically. Without more support from our provincial and local governments, there will be further cuts to library services in 2026.  This informal event is a call to action for everyone who lives in Cranbrook and RDEK Electoral Area C to advocate for increased funding for the library.

The library will provide postcards and pens for participants, so they can write to the provincial government, the City and the RDEK about why the library matters. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about the funding challenges facing the library and the impact of this years’ service cuts.

“Without more support from our local and provincial governments, the Library will be forced to make more cuts to services in 2026,” said Ursula Brigl, Chief Librarian. “This campaign is a critical opportunity for people to make their voices heard and help us secure the funding needed to maintain the vital services the library provides to our community.”

At the end of the Post Card writing campaign hundreds of postcards will be hand delivered to the City of Cranbrook, RDEK and the provincial government. The library encourages patrons to visit during their lunch break and coffee break on Friday and fill out a post card in support of the library.
