The source of inspiration for Bud’s Bench likeness
Letter to the Editor
It was with great pleasure that recently I ‘found’ the introduction of Bud Abbott’s Memorial Bench in e-KNOW posted in the newsletter on September 15.
To read the column at that time was to relive, not only the value of Bud’s contribution to the community, but also the tremendous love and effort of the artists, fund raisers and community leaders to accomplish this splendid memorial.
Its unveiling on September 10, 2022, was a great day for the principal artist Paul Reimer who created the extraordinary likeness of Bud in wrought iron. His work enhances our city in many places and one cannot but wonder at the source of his inspiration.
It was striking that in the case of the September 15, 2022 presentation of e-KNOW the published accompanying picture of Bud playing his trombone fulfilled the source of that inspiration for Paul, but there was no identification of the original artist who captured the inimitable character of Bud and whose photograph you chose to publish: It was Sally Passey who captured Bud’s image in one of his more pensive moods at the Farmers’ Market.
Co-incidentally, Paul also designed and installed the grave memorial stone for Sally who died in August 2022.
