Wasa Winter Festival a smashing success

By Krista Nebloch
The Wasa & District Lions Club hosted the Wasa Winter Festival to close out 2014 with a community celebration Dec. 31.
It was a clear, crisp, East Kootenay’s Bluebird sky day. The weather cooperated quite nicely.
This family friendly event had something for everyone.
On the new skating rink there were games of pickup hockey and skills games while frozen milk jug curling and learning to skate took place on the family rink.
The kids had children’s games and a big snow pile to climb and conquer.
And YES I did see adults playing on the snow pile.
There were plenty of bonfires to keep warm, catch up with old
friends and make some new ones during the busy holiday season.
It was a great opportunity to toast hot dogs or marshmallows for smores and drink way too much hot chocholate.
I learned that special to Wasa is fresh cooked, warm bannock; oh so yummy, a tradition they had back 12 years ago in the school skate-a-thon days.
Its a good tradition and I know that the Wasa Winter Festival will be a tradition that lasts a long time as well!
The evening was beautifully capped off with an 8 p.m. fireworks display by Maverick Fireworks on Wasa Lake.
And for those who were not worn out from the fresh air and skating all day, the rink lights went back on and pick up hockey was played to the wee hours of the New Year.
Thank you Wasa Lions Club, all the volunteers, and the sponsors for all of your hard work that made this very special event possible!
See you next New Year’s Eve day for Wasa Winter Festival 2015!
