Water rates to rise $1 a month
City of Cranbrook council Oct. 22 unanimously passed the first three readings of a bylaw that will up water rates $1 a month.
City water rate payers currently shell out $18 a month and when Waterworks Amendment Bylaw No. 3759 passes, the rate will rise to $19 a month.
“A $1 increase (5.56%) per month in the water user rate will generate approximately $124,817 more in revenue for 2013. Our forecasted total water user fee revenue in 2013 is $2,176,611,” outlined the city Finance and Computer Services department in a report to council. “As set out in the Five Year Financial Plan, the water user rate change will maintain the accumulated surplus at a reasonable level.”
Coun. Angus Davis praised city staff for their work.
“It is a good mark on the city’s reputation,” he said, noting that city services “pay for themselves. We are served very well by city administration and public works,” he said.
