Zombie horde invades Cranbrook
About 150 zombies were roaming through downtown Cranbrook this morning (Oct. 13), searching for brains and support for the Cranbrook Food Bank.
As a large throng of zombies can be hard to contain and are assuredly unpredictable, event organizers are to be commended for managing to expertly herd them along without anyone being bitten, infected or otherwise devoured.
Entrants were informed about ‘zombie etiquette, which included rules such as ‘keep your bloody hands to yourself’, ‘obey all traffic control signs and signals’, ‘don’t touch strangers’ and ‘no drugs and alcohol.’
There was no worry of that as the good-natured, fun-loving and bizarre event was more of a family affair than anything else.
There were prizes for best overall costume, most creative, best gore and best shuffle in the walk, which spanned from the Cranbrook Hotel parking lot to Baker Park, with midday downtown shoppers finding themselves halted by a gruesome slow moving parade. Many of the ‘walkers’ poured themselves into their roles, keeping up the zombie shuffle and groaning throughout the walk.
At the end of the Zombie Walk was a gathering at Baker Park where zombies were able to tuck into hot dogs and pop and pose for photographs.
Participants paid a $2 entry fee to enter for prizes and were encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank.
At press time they had raised $128, and joined tens of thousands of other people around the world in World Zombie Day fundraising activities.
Another Zombie Walk is planned for Kimberley at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27.
