55+ BC Games planning coming into focus

Zone 7 AGM Nov. 2

The cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley will be welcoming 3,500+ athletes to participate in the 2018 55+ BC Games, in September 2018.

The event will be one of the largest events hosted in our region. This annual multi-sport event is organized under the governance of the BC Seniors Games Society, but will focus heavily on the 1,200 volunteers required to host the various sports and activities.

The event creates a significant economic contribution to host communities. Langley, which hosted the 2014 Games, realized a direct economic impact of more than $3.1 million in the area. Of that, over 85% was created by the spending of Games participants, while the remainder was contributed by Games Society organizers and related agencies.

The cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley and the BCSGS will begin planning early in 2017.

Locally, the Zone 7 East Kootenay representatives of the BC Senior Games Society are actively recruiting membership for the executive. The Zone includes Cranbrook, Crawford Bay, Creston, Elkford, Fairmont Hot Springs, Fernie, Field, Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Radium Hot Springs, Riondel, Sparwood, Wycliffe and Yahk.

The local zone plays a significant role in organizing the athletes from our region to participate in all the Games, but are excited to build up much higher participation for our locally hosted event in 2018.

Director Bob Ewashen noted that “Zone 7 will see a much higher participation rate in all sports offered for this exciting event, and provides a great opportunity for members of the East Kootenay to have hands-on involvement in this sports extravaganza.

“President John Boucher, after providing strong leadership and raising our zone participation rates for the Coquitlam Games, finds that for personal reasons he needs to step down from his role. Additional positions available include the positions of Treasurer and Registrar.”

Individuals are encouraged to come out to the upcoming AGM, to hear about the exciting opportunity to become involved with the Zone 7 executive.

The Annual General Meeting for Zone 7 will be taking place on November 2, at 10 a.m. at the Cranbrook Seniors Hall, at 125-17th Avenue South.
