A good, easy read with a lot of entertainment

Book Review

By Derryll White

Sandford, John (2017).  Deep Freeze.

John Sandford is the type of serial author that a lot of readers follow from book to book.  His Virgil Flowers series has been very popular because Virgil started out as a younger agent for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.   He was a character very successful with the ladies and who had a number of affairs in the different cases he handled.

He became known as “that fucking Flowers” both by people he worked alongside of and residents of the small towns that he resolved criminal situations in. It gave the character a flair and sizzle that helped to carry the story.

‘Deep Freeze’ is the tenth novel in the Flowers series.  Virgil Flowers has settled down with a steady woman who he is sustaining a relationship with.  The original sexual energy has transferred over to a more analytical character, quirky in his thought processes but exciting in the way the cases evolve and, in this case, the murderer is caught.

John Sandford is a very capable writer who pays attention to character and plot development.  He is also very adept at making the reader laugh out loud at the crazy antics of Virgil; and his team of heavyweight backup agents.

If one is looking for a good, easy read with a lot of entertainment value, pick up ‘Deep Freeze.’  If the reader hasn’t followed the series it would be worthwhile to read some of the earlier volumes as well, to totally appreciate the richness of the Virgil Flowers character.  The experience will not disappoint.

Excerpt from the novel:

PRETTY PEOPLE – Pretty people, Virgil believed, both male and female, had a totally unwarranted, unearned lifelong advantage over average and ugly people.  The advantage began in their earlier years – What a pretty baby! – and persisted for most of their lives.  Quite often, they didn’t believe in their advantage.  Oh, they knew they were pretty, but they took it as their God-given right rather than an unearned gift.
