One important FireSmart step is removing tree branches within two metres of the ground. This will help prevent surface fires from moving into treetops.

You can prune dead branches at any time of year, but it is best to prune coniferous trees in the late winter when they are dormant.

Other steps you can take with coniferous trees include spacing them at least three metres apart and 10 metres from your home.
