Another big blast of snow is coming

The East Kootenay is a whirlwind of snow-clearing activity right now. Highway 3 between Sparwood and Crowsnest Pass is closed; regional highways are all blanketed with the fiercest snowfall of the season.

And sorry to report, but more snow is coming, warns Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting.

“The East Kootenay received the extreme end of the expected snow accumulations last night. Mainroad’s crews are working hard to clear the roadways on a priority basis and we have also brought in additional resources to assist in this snow clearing,” the highway maintenance contractor stated in an update to media this afternoon (Feb. 5).

“Unfortunately, another blast of winter is expected tonight. The East Kootenay can expect periods of heavy snow sometime after 7 p.m. with the heaviest accumulations expected after midnight into the early morning with possible accumulations of 20 – 30 cm for the southern falf and 10 – 15 for the northern half of the East Kootenay,” Mainroad reported.

Environment Canada has issued a Weather Warning for the Elk Valley and a Snow Fall Warning for the Cranbrook and Kimberley area.

Mainroad will have a full complement of equipment out addressing these conditions, the company said.

Mainroad also asks the public to provide our crews with the space they need to do their job and allow for extra time for your travels to ensure you are driving to the conditions of the road.

Please slow down and drive to the conditions.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting 24 hour hotline: 1-800-665-4929.  Please report road hazards and unsafe conditions.
