Community Cats

Did you know that, right here in British Columbia; there are tens of thousands of cats living outdoors with now one to care for them? They are called community cats – and they need our help!

Hunny is a staff favorite here! She was brought into us when she was extremely pregnant, now that her kittens aren't with her anymore she is looking for her furever home. Hunny has quite the personality! She loves to roll around while your trying to groom her. Hunny is a bundle of energy. She loves to play and is curious about everything. She is sure to keep you entertained and let you know when you are not paying enough attention!

Each community cat has a unique story. Some are abandoned cats whose guardians no longer wanted them. Others are born outside and have never had a home. Some have a home but spend most or all of their time outside. Others are lost cats that have never been found by their guardians.  Community cats often live in groups called colonies. Unfortunately, very few of them are spayed or neutered. In one year a female cat can have two litters of an average of 6 kittens each. Any female kittens born can then get pregnant themselves before they are six months old. The cycle repeats year after year, which is how cat colonies continue to grow.

We can help community cats by making sure they are spayed or neutered and not producing any more cats. Trap-neuter-return (TNR) involves safely catching all of the cats in a colony and having them spayed and neutered.  Kittens and friendly cats from the colony can be fostered until they are ready for adoption into loving homes. Feral cats can be returned to where they came from. Living with people would be too stressful for them because they are so fearful.  They are better adapted to life outdoors. People can volunteer to look after the feral cats, feeding them and providing them with warm shelters to sleep in.

If you are aware of a feral cat colony or would like to volunteer to help please call the shelter at 250-426-6751.

Sweetpea is a small cat that loves to be pet. She will brush up against you until you pay her lots of attention. Sweetpea has had lots of fun with the children from kids camp. She does not like other cats or dogs.

PetSmart Funds are still available to Help Spay/Neuter Your Cats and Kittens!

Do you have a cat or kitten that needs to be spayed or neutered?  We can help you out!  Please call the shelter or stop by to pick up a voucher.  We ask for a $40 donation to assist with the cost of the program if you are able to afford it.  Funding is very limited now so don’t wait. Once this grant is depleted you will have to go on a waiting list until more funding comes available.

Erma is a beautiful 5 year old girl. She is a little shy at first but doesn't take long to warm up to people. Erma loves her pets and a good brushing! She would do best in a single cat home and preferably a home with older children.

Angus is a happy boy! He is great with everyone he meets, he has been the #1 cat for the kids in our kids camp. Angus doesn't seem to mind dogs but would do best in a home with no other cats. He has some spurts of energy and will play but would rather lounge around the house accepting love and pets as much as possible.

Penny is a mischievous terrier mix looking for her forever home. She is a fearful dog who can be anxious when left alone. Penny needs positive reinforcement to become the best dog she can be. Penny needs an adult-only, experienced, gentle home, with a lot of time for exercise. Penny is stubborn and strong-willed. Wikipedia: Border terriers do well in task-oriented activities and have a surprising ability to jump high and run fast given the size of their legs. The breed has excelled in agility training, but they are quicker to learn jumps and see-saws than weaving poles. They take training for tasks very well, but appear less tractable if being taught mere tricks. They are intelligent and eager to please, but they retain the capacity for independent thinking and initiative that were bred into them for working rats and fox underground. Border terriers love to sit and watch what is going on. Walks with Borders will often involve them sitting and lying in the grass to observe the environment around them. They can be stubborn when they are tired and often require short breaks to sit and observe during long walks; it can be difficult to get them moving again.
