Cities enact campfire bans
Effective at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. This campfire ban will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
As a result of this prohibition, the City of Cranbrook will follow suit by banning all campfires within city limits, effective Thursday afternoon.
And the City of Kimberley is also enacting a ban on all open burning on Thursday.
All fire permits including barbecue pits will be suspended.
These prohibitions do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. The use of a campfire apparatus that does not meet these specifications is prohibited.
