Collective agreement ratified at Kootenay Savings

Kootenay Savings (KS) and United Steelworkers Union have announced the two sides have ratified a collective agreement.

“What we accomplished in two days reflects the organization we’re becoming, one that works collaboratively, makes decisions with purpose, and moves forward with clarity and respect,” the union and KS announced in a joint statement.

“This thoughtful ratification marks the beginning of a new era at Kootenay Savings. It shows what becomes possible when people come together with a shared vision and a genuine belief in one another. When we work side by side, with openness, trust, and a focus on the greater good, we can move mountains.

“The ratification results speak clearly: 99% in favour. This extraordinary level of support is not only an endorsement of the agreement but also a profound demonstration of unity. It signals shared confidence in our direction and in the strength of the relationship between our employees, our union leadership, and our organization.

“This agreement reflects mutual respect and shared success. When Kootenay Savings thrives, our employees thrive. When our employees thrive, our members and communities thrive. This agreement reinforces that our futures are interconnected.”

We are especially proud of the commitments in this agreement, including:

  • A 12% wage increase over three years; four per cent annually from 2026 to 2028
  • Enhanced time for proactive health and dental appointments, acknowledging that personal health is essential
  • Expanded and more flexible benefits, allowing customization for diverse family and personal needs
  • A progressive recognition that mental health is health, reflected in our Sick and Mental Health Paid Time Off language

These improvements reflect a deeper commitment to safety, wellness, mental health, and dignity. At Kootenay Savings, we see and support our people as whole individuals, and we continue to build an environment where employees feel safe, valued, and empowered.

As we reflect on this outcome, one thing stands out: it was the product of two voices speaking in harmony, labour and leadership. Each entered the conversation with different responsibilities but the same objective: ensuring the long-term strength of Kootenay Savings and the well-being of the people who make it what it is. This round of bargaining showed how aligned those perspectives have become.

“This agreement shows what is possible when people come to the table with respect and a shared purpose. The overwhelming support speaks to how strongly our members feel heard and valued. This is how strong unions and strong employers build strong communities,” said Dean Lott, United Steelworkers Union Area Coordinator.

Mark McLoughlin, CEO of Kootenay Savings stated: “This ratification represents more than alignment; it represents belief. Belief in each other, in our direction, and in what we can accomplish when we move forward united. It is a milestone moment and a model for cooperation in the credit union system.”

“These perspectives, coming from different roles but converging in meaning, underscore what makes this moment significant. Labour highlights the strength of voice and community. Leadership highlights the strength of unity and shared purpose. Together, they reflect a partnership defined by trust, respect, and a common commitment to the future,” the joint statement said.

“This agreement sets a new standard for cooperation, not only at Kootenay Savings but across the Canadian credit union system. It shows that unity is not a slogan but a practice, and that when we commit to one shared future, we can accomplish more than any of us could alone.

“As we move into the next chapter of Kootenay Savings, we do so with pride, purpose, and renewed confidence. Thank you to everyone who played a role in reaching this outcome. Your professionalism, integrity, and belief in this organization made this possible.

“Let this moment serve as a reminder of what we are capable of when we stand as one team, committed to each other, to our members, and to the communities we serve.”
