Crews working through weekend: Mainroad

Snowfall is forecasted to taper off later today as skies begin to clear and temperatures drop.
Once this weather system has passed through, conditions are expected to remain stable for several days.
Temperatures, particularly in the Elk Valley, are expected to remain in the sub -10C range through the weekend. Expect compact snow on roads and highways for the next several days until temperatures rise sufficiently to begin de-icing operations.
Mainroad crews will be applying winter abrasive during this period.
Roads and highways are being ploughed and sanded currently with priority being given to main routes, school bus routes and side roads in that order.
Crews will be working throughout the weekend to get to lower classification routes and side roads so please be patient and give them room to work, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting noted in a public update today.

“Leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and sand trucks, operators cannot shut off sanders and often can’t readily see vehicles travelling directly behind or beside them. Crews will pull over and let you pass if/when it is safe to do so,” Mainroad said.
Please leave yourself extra time and drive to conditions.
“Residents are reminded that we try to minimize snow discharge from plows into driveways where possible, but it is unavoidable and Mainroad is not responsible for cleaning it out,” the highways maintenance contractor noted.
