Drivers take heed; winter weather is here

Highway 3 at Sparwood.

The forecasted snow is arriving, with the eastern Elk Valley, Kimberley and Columbia Valley being hit the hardest early on.

If you have to drive on regional highways, please take note of the following conditions.

It’s heavy snowfall everywhere in the Elk Valley, according to DriveBC.

Heavy snowfall can be found along Highway 3 from the Alberta border to Fernie and up Highway 43 to Elkford.

There are winter driving conditions on Highway 93 from the Montana border to Highway 3.

Winter driving conditions and compact snow are reported for Highway 93 from Vermillion Crossing to Radium Hot Springs, and on Highway 93/95 from Fort Steele to Radium.

DriveBC notes there are winter driving conditions on Highway 93 from Fort Steele to Wasa and on Highway 95A between Cranbrook and Kimberley. The attached DriveBC photo of Kimberley clearly shows higher elevations are getting hit the hardest.

Winter driving conditions are also reported from Moyie to Cranbrook on Highway 3/95, and from Cranbrook to Wardner along Highway 3/93.

Snow is in the forecast for the next four days, according to Environment Canada.

Temperatures are expected to dip as low as -12 C in areas such as Elkford, Sparwood and Kootenay National Park.
