Eight local students earn Transfer Scholarships

The BC Scholarship Society recently announced 168 B.C. students will share $840,000 in Ike Barber Transfer Scholarships, with eight East Kootenay students qualifying.

The scholarships are awarded annually by the BC Scholarship Society to undergraduate students who have completed at least one year at a public post-secondary institution in B.C. and are transferring to another degree-granting institution to complete their studies.

Scholarship funds come from the returns on a $15-million endowment established by the province in 2006. The fund is named after philanthropist Irving K. Barber who had a long history of supporting public education and research projects in British Columbia before his death in 2012.

“These scholarships are helping more undergraduate students complete their academic goals,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Through the BC Scholarship Society, students are pursuing the next chapter in their post-secondary journeys and gaining the skills they need to find and attain a good job in B.C. and contribute to the dynamic and growing economy.”

To qualify for a transfer scholarship, students must have strong grades and a demonstrated commitment to community service.

“We trust that our Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship recipients know the best path to personal success and the role it plays in the prosperity of our community,” noted society Chair, Firas Abbasi. “The BC Scholarship Society is excited to be a propelling force along the way.”

Six College of the Rockies (COTR) students from Cranbrook and one from Fort Steele are receiving $5,000 each to aid in transfer to the University of Victoria. And one student from Fernie is getting the same boost from Selkirk College to the University of Northern B.C.

Students awarded from Cranbrook: Madison Adams, Kate Mcpherson, Ben Rogers, Noah Schuh, Levi Sykut-McCulloch and Jordan Welder. From Fort Steele: Andrea Wolff. From Fernie: Skye Irwin.

Since its founding in 2006, the BC Scholarship Society has awarded more than $33 million in scholarships and awards to thousands of BC students through five different programs including Transfer, International, Indigenous, Adult Basic Education, and Women in Technology. The society is governed by a volunteer board of directors and is administered by the Victoria Foundation.
