Elko fire vote postponed

Property owners in Elko will have to wait a bit longer before voting on a proposed new fire service for the community.

The Elko Fire Protection Service vote was scheduled to be held in conjunction with the November local government elections; however, Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area B Director Heath Slee says he feels more work needs to be done.

“My goal is to make sure we have all the information about the proposed service prior to taking it out to the community for a vote. There are still some outstanding issues and we will wait until we have those addressed before proceeding,” he said.

Slee and RDEK staff continue to look for additional sources of capital funding and are awaiting information as to whether to two used fire trucks  could  be put into service in Elko. Both of these items could reduce the overall cost of the service, thereby reducing the impact to taxpayers.A new referendum date has not yet been scheduled, but will be communicated to the community well in advance
