Evacuation Order in Fenwick Road area after derailment
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has issued an Evacuation ORDER in an area northwest of Bull River along the Kootenay River and Fenwick Road as CPKC responds to a train derailment that took place this morning.
The Evacuation ORDER includes five properties along the Kootenay River and Fenwick Road as follows:
- 2625 FENWICK RD
- 2627 FENWICK RD
- 3607 FENWICK RD
- 3664 FENWICK RD
- 3611 FENWICK RD
A tactical evacuation was done for the homes within the Evacuation Order area this morning. “The tactical evacuation was performed by RCMP and CP Police in response to the evolving situation,” said Regional Emergency Operations Centre Director Christina Carbrey.
Emergency Support Services (ESS) is available if needed. If you require ESS support, contact the RDEK Duty Phone at 250-489-9677. ESS is only available to those displaced from their primary residence.

The RDEK has issued a State of Local Emergency for Electoral Area C, which is required when an Evacuation Order is issued.

Fenwick Road is currently closed, and the RDEK asks that residents and travellers avoid the area.
Multiple cars of a CPKC train derailed Saturday morning around 7 a.m. along Fenwick Road and the Kootenay River.
There are no injuries. The preliminary assessment is that approximately 12 cars are involved, including cars carrying wood products and tanker cars carrying propane.
CPKC crews and equipment are responding to the site to conduct a full assessment and begin work on a clean-up.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators who will gather information and assess the occurrence.
