Expect some more snow today

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. is once again warning stakeholders about a weather event anticipated to impact the East Kootenay through today.

“We are expecting snow throughout the day Friday, April 3, across Service Area 11. The precipitation is forecast to start at different times and fall at varying intensity continue until early Saturday morning,” Mainroad stated.

Mainroad’s meteorological service is predicting snowfall to start falling on Friday morning in southern areas near the US border with Idaho and Montana, as well as in eastern areas of the Elk Valley. During this time, Mainroad expects the accumulation to be heavier in Elk Valley areas.

Other areas such as Cranbrook, Kimberley, and most of the Columbia Valley are forecast to receive a chance of flurries from Friday morning.

“Going forward into Friday evening, nearly the entire service area should be affected by snow. The accumulation amounts will range from roughly three cm in western areas to nearly 10 cm towards Elkford and Crowsnest Pass. We expect many areas to experience heavy snow at times which will cause poor visibility,” Mainroad said, adding things will improve moving into the weekend.

“We expect the event to end around overnight Friday night-Saturday morning. Once this is behind us, the forecast for the next several days shows a much lower probability of precipitation and mild temperatures.

“Due to the increasing severity of this event, followed by mild weather afterward, we would recommend that motorists avoid unnecessary travel until after the event has passed.

“Motorists will notice our crews applying proactive anti-ice chemicals to major roadways today to assist with snow removal and to help us to achieve clear road conditions much faster once the event ends.  Our crews will continue to address road hazards as they arise during and after the event.”
