Fatality along Highway 3 in West Fernie

On February 14 2026 at 0855 AM, Elk Valley Regional RCMP was advised of a two vehicle collision in the 2100 block of Highway 3 in Fernie BC. Officers attended, meeting Fernie Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance at the scene. Two vehicles travelling in opposite directions had collided after one vehicle lost control in the slushy and wet winter road conditions, causing multiple persons to be taken to Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie. Witness information showed that speed or driver error did not appear to be a factor in the collision at this time.  RCMP completed their investigation into the collision, the vehicles were removed and the road fully re-opened approximately one hour later.

Shortly after the highway was reopened, Elk Valley Hospital contacted RCMP advising that the passenger in one of the vehicles, a 56 year old woman from Cranbrook, had succumbed to injuries as a result of the collision. RCMP  engaged our Victim Services to support those involved and also pivoted the investigative tasks to what is now a fatal collision. This included speaking to a collision reconstructionist and conferring with BC Highway Patrol.  Elk Valley Regional RCMP offers our condolences to the family of the deceased as they go through this difficult time.

Our investigation is ongoing. File 2026-412 refers.
