Final KIJHL Power Rankings of the season

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is pleased to announce its Power Rankings for Week 23.

The Grand Forks Border Bruins closed out their weekend with a split.

They started by shutting out the Castlegar Rebels 4-0 as Nash Wassing’s 15th goal won the game, while Thomas Samborski earned his fourth shutout with a 24-save performance. Levi Astill, Austin Tellefson and Garrett Janzen each had two assists. The Border Bruins then lost 6-1 to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. Ashton Schram (8) opened the scoring for the Border Bruins, then the Nitehawks took control in the second period with Ollie Clement (20) scoring the winner. Samborski took the loss after allowing four goals on 15 shots. The Border Bruins finished sixth overall in the KIJHL with a record of 29-14-0-1.

The Kimberley Dynamiters closed out the regular season with a 5-1 loss to the Fernie Ghostriders. The Ghostriders led 4-0 before the Dynamiters hit the scoresheet on a Matthew Lenz (4) goal two minutes into the third. Mason Hillier was credited with the loss after allowing four goals on 25 shots in 40 minutes of action. The Dynamiters finished fourth overall in the league with a record of 31-9-2-2 and won the Eddie Mountain Division for the regular season.

The Williams Lake Mustangs swept a home-and-home set with the 100 Mile House Wranglers. In the first game at home, the Mustangs won 4-0. Keenan Holland led the Mustangs with two goals (13), including the winner, and three points, while Alex Jessey stopped 16 shots for his second shutout of the season. The win established a new season high for Jessey with nine and JP Desbrais had three points. In the second game, the Mustangs won 6-3 as Jaxson Dikur saved 38 of 41 shots. Kaelen Swanson netted the winner and had two goals and two assists. Desabrais scored twice and Declan Pocock had three assists. The Mustangs finished eighth overall in the league with a record of 26-13-2-3.

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks won both their games to close out the regular season and win the Neil Murdoch Division for the regular season. They opened the week with a 4-2 win over the Castlegar Rebels as Maddox Gandha’s first of two goals (8) stood as the winner after the Rebels scored twice in the final six minutes. Gandha led with three points, while Preston Shumate earned the win with 26 saves.

The Nitehawks then defeated the Grand Forks Border Bruins 6-1. Ashton Schram (8) opened the scoring for the Border Bruins, then the Nitehawks took control in the second period with Ollie Clement (20) scoring the winner. Landan Uzeloc was solid in goal making 25 saves. Gandha had two goals (10) and Brady Magarrell had three assists. The Nitehawks finished second overall in the league with a record of 33-11.

The Revelstoke Grizzlies returned to their winning ways after losing both games the previous weekend. The Grizzlies defeated the Osoyoos Coyotes 5-2 as Jake Phillips-Watts scored the winner and had two points, while Austin Seibel made 36 saves. The victory also helped the Grizzlies capture the Prestige Hotel and Resorts Cup as the regular season champions. It’s the first time since the 2007-08 season that they have finished first overall.

The Grizzlies then closed out the season with a dominant 7-1 win over the Sicamous Eagles. Former Eagle Walker Overwater drove the Grizzlies offence with four goals (13) and seven points – including setting up Connor Shymoniak’s winner. Shymoniak had two goals (16) and four points, while William Stewart stopped 35 of 36 shots. The Grizzlies captured the regular season title with a record of 33-8-1-2.
