Fire reported south of Sparwood
BC Wildfire Service August 30 reports a new fire about two km south of Sparwood, near Crahan Creek.
The suspected human caused fire is estimated at about .17 hectares.
Two fires reported yesterday near Wilmer and New Lake are now reported as being held.
The Bruce Creek fire, cause unknown is 1.3 ha and the Booth Creek fire near New Lake, northwest of Cranbrook, is being held at 3.1 ha. That fire is believed to be lightning caused.
The Doctor Creek fire remains a problem, growing to 5,852.0 hectares (estimated) as of today. The fire, 25 km southwest of Canal Flats, has forced an evacuation order for the Findlay Creek area.
“Fire behaviour increased yesterday afternoon (August 29) as a result of the winds from the cold front. Fire activity increased along the west and southeast flanks, with the fire moving uphill in the west. The estimated growth in size is attributed to the wind event,” BCWS reported.
“Ground crews continue to work with the support of aviation and heavy machines. Heavy equipment resumes work on building guards on the north and south west flanks. Crews are working to establish sprinklers in the north end gully to assist a natural fuel break.
“In the coming days, crews will continue to assess and fell damaged trees in work areas and along roadways that are posing safety challenges to firefighting personnel.
“Helicopters that bucket water onto areas of increased fire activity continue to support ground crews. In the northwest, where steep and rocky terrain has prevented ground crew access, a specialized rappel team will continue work on establishing helipads.”
