FireSmart BC launches back-to-school campaign

Aims to equip B.C. students with Wildfire Safety Skills

As students across British Columbia return to the classroom, FireSmart BC is launching a province-wide campaign to help teachers integrate wildfire education into their lesson plans.

The FireSmart BC Education Program offers free, ready-to-use activities and resources designed to give elementary school students the knowledge and skills they need to help keep their families and communities safe.

The program covers topics such as how wildfires start and spread, ways to make homes and neighbourhoods more resilient, and the important role individuals can play in wildfire prevention. By teaching these concepts early, FireSmart BC aims to empower the next generation to become active participants in protecting B.C. communities.

“Wildfire risk is part of life in British Columbia, and education is one of our strongest tools for prevention,” said Lucy Grainger, Education Officer at FireSmart BC. “When we give children the knowledge to understand wildfire safety, they take that information home, sparking conversations and actions that can benefit entire neighbourhoods.”

“Wildfire awareness begins with our children, who carry these lessons back to their families and communities,” said Amanda Reynolds, Mitigation Manager of the First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of BC (FNESS). “Education is not just about information, it’s about strengthening connections, protecting traditions, and ensuring that everyone has the tools to stay safe.”

Teachers, principals, and school staff across B.C. can download the lesson plans, activities, and materials free of charge. Resources are designed to be easy to implement, requiring no special equipment or prior wildfire expertise.

The back-to-school campaign includes direct outreach to schools, internal communications to FireSmart representatives, social media promotion, and a press push to encourage widespread participation.
