Forests, Water and Our Future: A Community Conversation

Join an evening of community conversation about our forests and watersheds on Wednesday, April 15.
Experts Dr. Garry Merkel and Dr. Younes Alila will join Wildsight conservation specialists Eddie Petryshen and Tim Chapman at Grist and Mash Brewery in Kimberley for this panel and community discussion.
Residents will learn about how industrial forestry is changing the hydrology of our watersheds, how this relates to Kimberley, and how we can help shape the future of our forests.
Dr. Garry Merkel is a professional forester and Director of the Centre of Indigenous Land Stewardship at the University of British Columbia, as well as a longtime resident of the Kimberley area. Dr. Merkel co-authored B.C.’s Old Growth Strategic Review, and brings a wealth of knowledge about the political and ecological realities impacting British Columbia’s forests.
Dr. Younes Alila is a professor of forest hydrology at the University of British Columbia. Dr Alila’s research focuses on obtaining and implementing science-based data to promote robust forest policy.
His work continues to bring important solutions to urgent operational problems within the forestry sector, as well as provide a solid foundation with which to build sustainable forest and water resource management in British Columbia.
“We’re excited to bring people together to facilitate important conversations about the big picture — and talk about how we can change the trajectory of our local forests,” said Wildsight’s Tim Chapman.
The event’s panel discussion will occur from 7–8:30 p.m., followed by social time and the opportunity for informal conversations.
