Fort Steele parking 1077 for review
Fort Steele Heritage Town Society announced April 13 it is going to park the 1077 steam locomotive train in 2024 while it conducts a full independent review of the locomotive and rail operations.
“When it comes to the railway operations at Fort Steele, our first priority has and always will be the safety of our visitors, staff, livestock, and volunteers above all else,” Fort Steele stated on social media.
“The society has made a difficult but informed decision to park the train in 2024 while it conducts a full independent review of the locomotive and rail operations. Repairs will be costly – and we realize that this train has become a cornerstone of Fort Steele Heritage Town.”
The review will include:
- a thorough mechanical assessment of the locomotive and all operating rolling stock;
- an assessment of the tracks and track bed;
- a review of the Safety Management System (SMS) for the Fort’s rail operations;
- a review of operating practices, railway personnel qualifications (training and fitness);
- recommendations to the Society on requirements to move forward to resume rail operations at Fort Steele Heritage Town, and estimated costs to do so.
“Please know that we are doing everything we can to operate the train this season, even if it means a late start. We will do our best to keep you updated along the way!
“It is important for us to share that we are currently focusing on a number of advancements as we move into and plan for the future. This year may appear to be a little different. If we seem a little quieter, it is because we are busy working on numerous season 2024 preparations and making improvements.
“We will be making announcements as things progress. Please stay tuned – our goal is the best visitor heritage experiences for all!
“To all our past, current, and future volunteers from gardeners to livestock and every other important role in between: 2024 is upon us and we are putting the finishing touches on our volunteer plan and volunteer needs at Fort Steele Heritage Town.
“Volunteers will be back this summer. You are important to our success. Please stay tuned – we do need you!
“We are excited for the future of Fort Steele, and we hope you will bear with us while we work hard to ensure your safety, while providing a guest experience you walk away from with a smile each and every time,” Fort Steele outlined.
