Fuel reduction work underway at Wasa

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) this morning passed along information from the Ministry of Forests regarding a fuel reduction project in the Wasa area.

The mechanical treatment, which has already begun, consists of 75 ha east of Wasa Lake and is being done by the Provincial Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR) Program, the RDEK reported on social media.

The treatment will consist of several hand-fallers working in tandem with skidders and excavators to process and sort at designated landings.

The treatment will target ground and ladder fuels, while all trees over 22 cm diameter at breast height will be left.

The treatment unit looks to create defensible ground in the event of a wildfire (lower intensity, reduce risk of crown fire and spotting, lower the rate of spread).

Signage will be placed at entry points warning the public of operations taking place during periods of active work. Please respect active work areas and do not enter active falling sites.

If you have any questions, please contact KC Gano, Resource Operations Specialist WRR, at 250-267-4284.
