Grants available for groups targeted by hate and violence

Community organizations that have experienced or are at risk of experiencing hate-motivated crimes will benefit from grants to enhance security measures and make repairs.

“Nobody should have to experience incidents of hate in our province, and the places where communities come together should always feel safe,” said Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

“The anti-hate stream within the Civil Forfeiture Grant Program offers organizations the opportunity to foster safe environments for their communities and recover from the impacts of hate-motivated crimes.”

The Civil Forfeiture Grant Program’s anti-hate stream provides grants to eligible places of worship, cultural community centres and other at-risk groups, such as 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations. Funding can be used for security equipment, graffiti removal and repairs to damaged property, as part of efforts to respond to hate-motivated crimes.

Funding is being made available for organizations through the 2025-26 Civil Forfeiture Grant Program and applications are open.

The funding is made available through the Civil Forfeiture Office, which was established in 2006 with the purpose of removing the tools and proceeds of unlawful activity and redirecting them back into programs that support community safety and crime-prevention initiatives.

The Civil Forfeiture Office continues to evolve by implementing innovative new tools, such as unexplained wealth orders, to identify and forfeit the proceeds of crime. By turning unlawful proceeds into supports for those most at risk, government is addressing the root causes of crime while disrupting the profit motive for criminal organizations.

Funding will support organizations, such as places of worship or cultural community centres, that have sustained damages to their sites or are seeking to enhance security measures in and around their sites.

Expenses incurred on or after Jan. 1, 2025, will be considered for funding.

Eligible organizations that have more than one site are permitted to apply for a maximum of three sites.

Organizations that have received funding are not being publicly identified to support their safety from future hate-motivated incidents.
