Heavy rain expected in Elk Valley and Kootenay Pass

Environment Canada this morning issued a special weather statement, warning of heavy rainfall in the Elk Valley and along the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass stretch of Highway 3, as well as Boundary, West Kootenay, Arrow Lakes and Slocan Lake.

The warning spans Sunday night through Monday, April 10,

Rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm are anticipated along with rising freezing levels combined with melting snow that may result in increased river flows and possible localized flooding, Environment Canada stated.

“A frontal system will approach Sunday night and then stall over the area on Monday. This system will bring a prolonged period of rain which will ease Monday night.

“Freezing levels will rise to between 2,000 and 2,500 metres. Rainfall, along with melting snow, may result in pooling water or minor flooding in low-lying areas.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Road conditions are available at www.drivebc.ca

The weather statement does not include Cranbrook/Kimberley and Columbia Valley areas, with rain forecast for Monday.
