Heavy snowfall expected in Elk Valley over weekend
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting this afternoon issued a forecast warning of heavy snowfall coming to the Elk Valley over the weekend.
“The service area is expecting light snowfall to begin early Friday morning, with the Elk Valley being impacted the most with heavy snowfall over the weekend,” Mainroad said in a stakeholders’ update.
Snowfall is forecasted to begin early Friday morning and continue to Sunday morning. Snowfall will begin light on Friday with accumulation of one to three centimetres, increasing in accumulation on Saturday with 10 – 15 cm forecasted.
Light snow will begin in Cranbrook and area Friday morning with one cm of accumulation. Saturday mixed precipitation is forecasted with temperatures above zero and five mm of rain and 1one cm of snow expected.
In the Yahk area, scattered flurries will begin early Friday morning and continue all day Friday, snowfall accumulation for Friday is forecasted at one cm. Saturday the light snow will be turning to rain with temperatures above zero, 10 – 15mm of rain is expected for the Yahk area, Mainroad said.
Milder weather is expected for Columbia Valley. Friday has no precipitation in the forecast, with mixed precipitation expected on Saturday with five mm of rain and one cm of snow.
Mainroad crews are currently out pre-treating highways with liquid anti – ice material. Please leave a safe following distance to allow our crews to work perform their work in a safe manner.
