Judgment Prey great for a relaxing beach or backyard read

Book Review

By Derryll White

Sandford, John (2023).  Judgment Prey.

As one of the author’s characters aptly says, “This is the A Team.”  Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, each the leading light of their own novel series, combine in ‘Judgment Prey’.  It is an easy relationship as they have had each other’s backs in very tense situations before.

Sandford is always a quick and easy read. Lots of action, lots of humour and lots of ‘guy’ talk. I don’t know that there is a lot here to hold female readers and it would seem that the author doesn’t really care. His sales continue to expand into mind-blowing numbers.

Book advice – summer is here.  ‘Judgment Prey’ would be a great and relaxing beach or backyard read.

Excerpt from the novel:

SCAMS – “And how much would the project cost?” Lucs asked.

“However much we could raise,” Hinton said, as though that were obvious.  “The deal is, you can get money for street-people housing from the governments – state, federal, some from the city – but most of it comes from do-gooder foundations.  The foundations want a local charitable buy-in, maybe ten percent.  Noah thinks if we get the ball rolling downhill, with big shots like Sand buying in and recruiting new money, we can raise a million.  That might be a ten-million-dollar project.  If he raises eight hundred thousand, it’ll be an eight-million-dollar project.  And so on.”

Virgil whistled.  “He’d take out a million?  How would he get it clean?”

“He plays poker in Vegas.  He wins.  I mean, not really.  He doesn’t actually play.  He buys the chips with cash, takes back checks when he cashes out, so he has the checks from the casinos to prove his so-called winnings.”
