KIJHL playoff matchups set
All three of the East Kootenay’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) teams are bound for the playoffs, starting Feb. 23, as the final week of the regular season gets underway tomorrow.
The first place Kimberley Dynamiters will welcome the Fernie Ghostriders for the first two games of the opening round series at the Civic Centre Feb. 23 and 24 (7:30 p.m. start times). Games three and four are Sunday, Feb. 25 and Tuesday, Feb. 27 in Sparwood (7:30 p.m. starts).
Game five, if necessary, is back in Kimberley on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
The second place team in the Eddie Mountain Division, Creston Valley Thunder Cats, are welcoming the third place Columbia Valley Rockies on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Johnny Bucyk Arena, with games three and four in Invermere Monday, Feb. 26 and Tuesday, Feb. 27.
If necessary, game five is March 1 in Creston, six March 2 in Invermere and game seven March 3 back in Creston. All game times are 7:30 p.m.
First off, the teams must conclude regular season play this week.
The Rockies and their fans get a taste of upcoming first round action with a tilt against the Thunder Cats and their dynamic duo of Liam Plunkett and Ronnie Wilkie (top two scorers in the KIJHL) tomorrow evening (Feb. 13) at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena in Invermere. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The Rockies head to Golden for a 7:30 p.m. clash with the Rockies on Wednesday, Feb. 14 and then close out the regular schedule by hosting the powerful Nitros on Friday, Feb. 16.
Kimberley finishes the regular season with a trip to Creston on Saturday, Feb. 17.
The Ghostriders have a home and home series Feb. 16 and 17 against the Rockets. Friday’s game in Sparwood is also part of the district’s Winterfest celebrations.
Fernie then concludes the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 18 with another Sparwood home tilt against Creston.
The Dynamiters enter the playoffs as the top team in the KIJHL.
