Kootenay Youth Build-A-Business Program launched

What if the next big idea to solve a critical local issue came from a teenager in your community?

The Kootenay Youth Build-A-Business program (BAB) is making it happen by harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity of Kootenay youth.

This exciting partnership between the Kootenay Association for Science & Technology (KAST) and Impact Toolbox, made possible with the Rural Economic Development and Infrastructure Program grant award to KAST for Youth Entrepreneurship, is giving young change-makers in the Kootenays a chance to turn their ideas into impactful and innovative initiatives.

BAB brings together 200+ Kootenay teens and 12 local educators for a 10-week journey to develop innovative business ideas that drive positive change. Through hands-on training and mentorship, students will transform their ideas into ventures contributing to community-led innovation and long-term change across the region, while building the confidence and curiosity to pursue entrepreneurship beyond the program.

“By making high-quality education and career development opportunities available regardless of location, BAB empowers young people throughout the Kootenays to gain the skills and confidence needed to explore STEM careers and entrepreneurship,” explained Lauren Bergman, Youth Coordinator at KAST.

The program wraps up with a virtual community showcase on March 13, where select youth teams will present their ideas and have the chance to win prestigious awards to kick-start their ventures. Community members are invited to register for the showcase and attend to celebrate young innovators driving the future of the Kootenays.

Based in Kelowna, Impact Toolbox is a social enterprise incubator offering emerging leaders equitable opportunities to turn ideas and passion for social change into viable community projects, businesses, and careers.

Last year, they worked with Community Futures East Kootenay (CFEK) to help local nonprofit leaders launch four high-impact social enterprises. Now, they’re bringing their global expertise, resources, and established curriculum to Kootenay youth with ongoing support from CFEK.

“BAB is an incredible opportunity for youth in the Kootenays to explore their potential. We can’t wait to see how these bright, creative minds will use their ideas to shape the community on a local and maybe even global scale,” said Tanya Misra, Programs Manager at Impact Toolbox.

KAST has driven economic development in the Kootenays through technology and innovation since 1998. They are dedicated to supporting the growth of technology-driven enterprises in the Kootenays and developing the skills of today’s youth in tomorrow’s businesses.

“What excites me most is seeing the incredible ventures youth come up with! The program and mentors help provide a framework where their ideas can grow and develop. Their fresh perspectives, bold creativity, and commitment to making a difference inspire hope for a future shaped by technology, innovation, empathy, and action,” said Lauren, KAST Youth Coordinator.

Be part of the impact: Register for the virtual community showcase to watch the finalists compete for prizes and share their ideas.
