Layer by Layer theme for Heritage Week 2024

Heritage BC is excited to launch Heritage Week 2024, an annual event that celebrates and commemorates heritage across the province, taking place February 19-25.

This year’s theme invites you to dig deeper into your community’s past and explore the many layers and stories that your unique community holds. Take some time this week to learn something new about the many “layers” of the place you call home.

Heritage BC Executive Director Kirstin Clausen explains that “anyone can join in celebrating Heritage Week. During the week, we encourage folks to participate in events taking place in their communities, from behind-the-scenes tours, to children’s activities, community days, and more! Heritage Week brings attention to the many layers of heritage that, understood together, helps us better appreciate the diversity, rich history, and cultural values of our communities.”

As part of Heritage Week awareness, Heritage BC has mailed 2,000 posters to museums, libraries, and heritage groups. It is also asking municipalities to join the Province of B.C. in making a heritage week proclamation.

Communities across the province will participate in Heritage Week by hosting events and activities that highlight the many layers of heritage that make up their communities. Find their events on the online Heritage Week 2024 events calendar, where new activities are being added regularly.

“We hope this Heritage Week will encourage reflection,” said Britney Dack, Chair of the Board of Directors at Heritage BC. “It is an opportunity to recognize the depth and variety of history and cultural diversity that we have inherited as a province. Layer by Layer encourages us to think about the whole history, and all of the inherited traditions, places, and stories that make our communities what they are today.”

Heritage BC is a member based, non-profit organization that supports and advocates for BC’s broad heritage sector through education, training and skills development, and capacity building in heritage planning and conservation. In addition to raising awareness through Heritage Week, we fund heritage projects through our Heritage Legacy Fund and in partnership with the Province, and lead progressive heritage initiatives such as our Setting the Bar guide for reconciliation in heritage, which was recognized with the Governor’s 2022 Award from the National Trust for Canada.
